Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, and began his career performing with his brothers in the Jackson 5 in 1969. The group shot to fame with several hits but eventually Jackson went solo and became a megastar in his own right. His 1982 album 'Thriller' became the best-selling album of all time.
Michael Jackson will forever be remembered as a pioneering musical talent, with a unique voice and trademark dance moves, most notably his signature dance 'The Moonwalk'. He picked up numerous awards and accolades for his music and videos, earning him the title of 'The King of Pop' and 40 years after his career began he continued to be a major draw with sellout concerts around the world. Earlier this year he announced a series of concerts in the UK which were intended to be a farewell to his fans.
He has also been involved with numerous charities and devoted much of his time and energy to causes including The Michael Jackson Foundation, The Prince's Trust and The Heal The World Foundation. However, his legacy will be tinged with controversy after enduring ongoing allegations of innapropriate behaviour and child abuse which often overshadowed his music and extensive charitable work. He will be remembered equally as well for his eccentricity as his music.
