Crowds lined the streets of the Cameroon capital Yaounde on Thursday (March 19) on the final day of the Pope's three day trip to the African country.
Police used sticks to keep many in the crowd under control. Pope Benedict visited the National Centre for Rehabilitation of Disabled people in Yaounde as the Vatican was still trying to contain the damage from his comments on the use of condoms to fight AIDS.
Many, but not all in the crowd were critical of the pope's comments about condoms.
''I was myself surprised by this problem of condom. If he (the pope)refuses this,it means the disease, especially Aids will spread everywhere,'' said Yaounde resident Bernadette Fonge.
''The condom is something very important for the society to obliterate Aids, especially in Cameroon and in Africa and in the entire world," said student Eric Mukam.
One unnamed local resident was in support if the pope's controversial comments.
''This is the message of the pope, abstinence and loyalty to only one man,' she said.
The Vatican spokesman defended the pope's stand, saying Benedict was merely re-stating the position of his predecessors that fidelity within heterosexual marriage and abstinence are the best ways to stop AIDS.
The pope files to Angola on Friday.
