Puerto Rican actor
Benicio del Toro said on Tuesday (February 3) that Ernesto 'Che' Guevara would be very proud to see how Bolivian President Evo Morales is leading the Latin American country and very surprised to witness the election of an African-American leader as President of the United States.
"If Che was alive right now he would be very proud of Evo Morales, will be very proud, and very proud I think he will be very proud and surprised, let's say if we take Che from the moment he died and bring him now, he will be very surprised to find out that Evo Morales got to be President of Bolivia by means of elections.¨
"I think that he also will be surprised that there was an African American in the White House in the United States, he would be also very surprised, I think he would like it too. But I think, you know, Evo Morales we could say is a dream of Che Guevara,"
Del Toro told Reuters Television in an interview in Barcelona where he was to promote the Spanish-language film 'Guerrilla', the second part of 'Che' in which he plays the role of the Latin American rebel.
Oscar-winning
del Toro also said that it was important to highlight the human side of Guevara in his role.
"For me was important to play him as a human being because that's what I learnt from the people that knew him, all of them respected him, all of them loved him, but all of them also made me understand that he was a human being, it took the time to make me said: 'He makes mistakes, he was a human been he was not perfect.' That was our goal, to make him human," he said.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh 'Guerrilla' tells the story of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara's role in the Cuban revolution which led to him pursue a Latin American revolution starting in Bolivia where he died in 1967.
'Guerrilla' will be released in Spain on February 27.
