THAILAND: THAI BAKER SCULPTS SHOCK ART BODY PARTS OUT OF BREAD

Story

A Thai baker adds new meaning to the term 'shock art' by sculpting gruesome body parts from dough.
It was a rude awakening for residents living in the quiet Thai province of Ratchaburi when one morning they suddenly discovered human body parts being displayed at their local bakery.
Dozens of gruesome heads, feet and hands were showcased like works of art behind glass cases in a scene closer to a Hollywood horror film than a bakery.
To their surprise, locals found 28-year-old baker, Kittiwat Unarrom (PRON: KITTY-WHAT UH-NA-ROM) sculpting the grotesque limbs from flour dough in the back kitchen.
The sculpture, painting and graphic arts graduate says he is creating the fake body parts to illustrate the old Buddhist saying "Don't always believe what you see, because what you see might ] not be true".
Growing up around his mother's bakery, Kittiwat says he was curious to use ordinary cooking materials like dough, cashew nuts, raisins and chocolate to create genuine works of art.
He says he was inspired by the idea that we are what we eat.
Despite initially causing quite a stir in the neighbourhood, Kittiwat says people have become increasingly interested in his works.
"I didn't expect such a big response and the huge number of orders from customers.
People are asking for more gruesome and scary bread sculptures, they say this will impress them more. I didn't expect that," he said while standing in his kitchen which doubles as his art studio.
Kittiwat's skill in sculpting life-like replicas of human body parts did not come over night.
He says he experimented with baking, shaping and colouring dough for about three years, and now spends up to six hours a day working on the fake body parts.
He first earned recognition for his work in 2003 when he won a gold prize for one of his bizarre pieces in a student competition at Bangkok's Silpakom (PRON: SEE-LA-PA-CORN) University where he studied art.
Two years on, Kittiwat has more than two hundred pieces of distorted human faces and several recreations of hands and feet.
While he does not want to sell the best of his creations, increasing demand from customers has led to the release of limited bits and pieces of his bread body parts.
Pornkaew Samransook (PRON: PORN-KE-OW SAM-RAAN-SOOK) bought a piece resembling a nose and mouth for the bargain price of 70 baht, or 1.70 in U.S. dollars.
"Because he dared to make it, I will dare to eat it," he said.
Kittiwat says the bread is perfectly edible and sells for up to 490 U.S. dollars.
He says his edible art lures about a hundred visitors a day and he plans to hold an art exhibition in the capital Bangkok at the end of November.
