OMAN: SHAH OF IRAN VISITS PROVINCE WHERE IRANIAN TROOPS HELPED CRUSH UPRISING.

Story

On the second day of his four-day visit to Oman, the Shah of Iran has been looking at the province of Dhofar where his forces helped crush a left-wing rebellion.
SYNOPSIS: The first stop on the tour was at Thumrait, an 80 kms flight over barren mountains and desert.
The Shah and his host, Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, were greeted at the airport by an Iranian officer who had fought in the campaign against the rebels, and by an officer from Britain's Royal Air Force. For newsmen accompanying the party, the trip was hectic... many were later to complain of bruised ribs from the military bodyguards. From the airport at Thumrait, the tour went straight on to Salalah, about 70 kilometres away.
Throughout the journey security was stringent.... Iran still maintains a brigade headquarters in the province, although the Dhofar rebels were officially declared defeated two years ago.
The town of Salalah is the second largest in Oman... a few score guerrillas are still believed to be hiding out in the area, but they are no longer regarded as serious threat.
Talks between the Shah of Iran and Sultan Qaboos are believed to have centred on Gulf security and ways of developing economic co-operation between the two countries. Officials travelling with the Shah said he would have renewed his pledge to help Oman face any thereat of external aggression or internal subversion. Diplomatic speculation that the Shah would announce further Iranian troop withdrawals during his visit have been dismissed as 'unfounded'.
