ICELAND: COD WAR ESCALATES WITH MORE CLASHES BETWEEN BRITISH FRIGATES AND ICELANDIC GUNBOATS.

Please read the Disclaimer

The Cod War between Britain and Iceland has flared up again with more clashes between British frigates and Icelandic gunboats off the east and north east coast of Iceland. The dispute, caused by Iceland's self-proclaimed 200 mile limit for British fishing trawlers, has been the reason for Iceland breaking off diplomatic relations with Britain. So far all talks to solve the issue have broken down and British trawlers protected by British naval frigates are still fishing in the sea off the Icelandic coast. In the past few months there have been several incidents involving shipping from both sides....each blaming the other for instigating the trouble. On Friday the British frigate HMS Mermaid was seriously damaged after a collision with the Iceland gunboat Thor. Mermaid's bow was ripped from the sealine to the anchor line. Earlier other collisions between HMS Juno and an unidentified gunboat and between HMS Diomede and the gun boat, Baldur, were also reported. In the incident involving Baldur and Diomede the Icelandic vessel had been trying to cut the warps of individual trawlers in the area. Diomede was protecting the trawler, Carlisle, which was fishing five miles away when the Baldur tried to get between the two boats. To do so Baldur made two attempts to ram Diomede and on the third attempt succeeded. Although no one was reported injured in any of the incidents there was considerable damage to the vessels involved. There have been more incidents in the Cod War between Britain and Iceland. BBC reporter, Ian Smith, was aboard HMS Diomede when it was rammed by the Icelandic gunboat Baldur last week. This film is serviced with a commentary by BBC reporter, Ian Smith, aboard HMS Diomede at the time of the collision with the gunboat Baldur.

H.M. Diomede took over from the frigate Mermaid just before two. Baldur then made the first of her attempts to dominate Diomede and get between her and the fishing trawler Carlisle who was still fishing over five miles away. A tactic - to come in across Diomede's bows. Diomede's hooter formally warned Baldur-You are Not doing enough to avoid collision -. Baldur kept on coming then at the last minute pulled away missing by ten feet. Then Baldur repeated the tactic this time missing by eighteen inches. Finally Baldur came in on a run further ahead than before and cut across Diomede's bows. The damage was not severe, neither to Baldur nor to Diomede.
