CANADA'S NUMBER ONE SLEIGH, STEERED BY VIC EMERY, WON THE FOUR-MAN BOBSLEIGH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AT ST. MORITZ TODAY (SUNDAY) FOR THE SECOND YEAR ON SUCCESSION. ITALY'S NUMBER ONE CREW WERE SECOND.
THE LIGHT BLUE CANADIAN SLEIGH, WITH A RED MAPLE LEAF ON THE FRONT, HURTLED DOWN THE 1,620 METRES (ABOUT ONE MILE) COURSE AND AROUND ITS 16 STEEPLY BANKED CURVES IN ONE MINUTE 20.09 MINUTES ON THE FINAL RUN. THIS GAVE EMERY AND HIS CREW OF GERALD PRESLEY, MIKE YOUNG, AND PETE KIRBY, AN AGGREGATE OF 5 MINUTES 17.78 MINUTES FOR FOUR RUNS IN THE TWO-DAY CHAMPIONSHIPS.
THE CANADIANS LED BY 2.04 SECONDS OVER THEIR NEAREST CHALLENGERS, ITALY'S NUMBER ONE CREW OF NEVIO DE ZORDO, ITALO DE LORENZO, PIETRO LESANA AND RENATO MOCELLINI - WHO CLOCKED AN AGGREGATE OF 5 MINUTES 19.82 SECONDS.
THE UNITED STATES SLEIGH MANNED BY FRED FORTUNE, RICHARD KNUCKLES, JOE WILSON AND JAMES LORD, WAS ONLY A HUNDREDTH OF A SECOND SLOWER WITH FIVE MINUTES 19.83 SECONDS OTHER PLACINGS WENT TO THE WEST GERMAN NO. 2 CREW, WHO WAS FOURTH; THE ITALIAN NO. 2 TEAM, WHO WAS FIFTH, AND THE SWISS NO. 1 CREW, WHO WAS SIXTH.
UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS MADE THE RUN SLOWER THAN EARLIER YEARS - DUE MAINLY TO SLEET WHICH FELL BEFORE RACING BEGAN TODAY.
