LOST CHILDREN OF THE EMPIRE
LOST CHILDREN OF THE EMPIRE
This extraordinary and chilling tale looks at the fate of some of the 150,000 British orphans, between the ages of three and thirteen, who - often without their parents' knowledge or consent - were shipped abroad this century to be brought up in childrens homes in Canada, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and Australia. The practice began at the turn of the century and reached its peak in the 1930s, but children were still going overseas "to new homes" as late as 1967. Some were exploited, many were abused but for others it was the opportunity of a lifetime. The Child Migrants Trust aims to help these people trace their roots in Britain. In 1991 the programme won the Silver Hugo Award for Documentary at the 26th Chicago International Film Festival. And has also won a gold medal at the International film and Television Festival of New York. Featuring: Margaret Humphreys Charles Davenport Bert Wayling Florence Aulph Mike Wilkins George Stuart Ray Ponter Tom Paine Pamela Smedley George Wilkins John McGillion Gordon Grant
