Nelson Mandela met the South African national football team, or Bafana Bafana, to wish them well ahead of their Confederations Cup Semi-final against Brazil on Thursday (June 24).
The informal meeting at the former South African president's office in Houghton was attended by 23 players and their support staff.
Mandela and the squad wore "Mandela Day" t-shirts named for the day which will be launched on his 91st birthday on 18 July.
The day is dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela and encourages people around the world to do good in their own communities. It is hoped that the day, which is not a holiday, will be celebrated annually and start an international movement for change.
Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena presented Mandela with a team shirt with his name and the number 91, in honour of his next birthday.
Bafana Bafana made it into the Confederations Cup semi-finals despite a 2-0 loss to Spain last Thursday and will be going up against Brazil, the current cup champions, in Bloemfontein. Other teams in the semi-finals include Spain and the USA, who staged a victory against Egypt to make it to the semi-finals.
Team captain Aaron Mokoena has been quoted in the local press as saying his team will need the "spirit of '96", when the country became the African champions, to beat Brazil.
