King Abdullah of Jordan is welcomed by Chilean President Michelle Bachelet at the La Moneda presidential palace during the first leg of a Latin American tour that also includes Argentina and Brazil.
King Abdullah of Jordan was welcomed by Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on Monday (October 20) at the La Moneda presidential palace in the Chilean capital of Santiago during the first leg of a Latin American tour that also includes Argentina and Brazil.
At the start of a four-day visit to Chile, King Abdullah, who was accompanied by his wife Queen Rania, were welcomed by a military guard of honour.
The King then held talks with Bachelet to discuss ways of expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.
According to the official website of Kind Abdullah, both leaders discussed regional and international political developments and prospects of Chile's contribution to peace efforts in the Middle East.
The two countries signed three initial agreements in tourism, investment and public works and will renew a programme for scientific and cultural promotion.
"Our two nations have much contributed to each other and to the world and I hope that in talks that we had today and in our discussions we will have tonight and tomorrow, we can find new areas of cooperations and agreements in strengthening both our economic partnerships, in diplomatic coordination to end the regional conflicts you just mentioned and of course in cross cultural dialogue. I'm looking forward very much to our discussions with the private sector tomorrow. The opportunities between our two nations are extreme and we will have the ability, I hope with this visit, to build new bridges for the nations between Chile and Jordan," King Abdullah told a news conference.
Abdullah is set to meet with several political and business leaders to strengthen bilateral relations as well as members of the Arab and Jordanian community in Santiago.
Trade volume between the two countries stands at less than $5 million as Jordanian imports from Chile stood at $4.71 million, while its exports to the Latin American country were worth $0.13 million.
Jordan mainly imports grains, fruits, seeds, beverage, drugs and pharmaceuticals, while it exports plastic, furniture, textiles and domestic appliances, according to Abdullah's official website.
