Members of the Mexico soccer team said on Monday (August 18) they felt obliged to beat Honduras, at the start of the 2010 South Africa Fifa World Cup qualifying because they will play at home.
On August 20, Mexicans will tune into Sven-Goran Eriksson's debut match as coach when the team faces Honduras in its third and penultimate knock-out World Cup phase in the North and Central America (CONCACAF) qualifying tournament.
"We should worry about what we'll do on the pitch, not by what Honduras says. We should concentrate and do things on the pitch," the experienced forward, Cuauhtemoc Blanco who plays for Chicago Fire, told a news conference.
The game will kick off on Wednesday at the Aztec Stadium at 20:00 local time (0100 GMT on Thursday).
The return of Blanco was a novelty in Eriksson's team line-up, after the player had not been summoned since the 2007 Copa America, held in Venezuela, where Mexico finished third.
Giovanni Do Santos, who plays for Tottenham Hotspurs, hoped for a good start to the qualifiers.
"On Wednesday we all want to win and gain three points which is the most important thing and to remain unbeatable in the Aztec stadium, for us that would be a great start."
Carlos Salcido, who plays for the PSV Eindhoven, also hoped for the best.
"The truth is, we all want to play a good game and for everything to go smoothly in the qualifier. What we want is to qualify for the World Cup.
After Honduras, we'll face any team and hope everything goes well."
Mexico and Honduras are in Group B together with Canada and Jamaica in the CONCACAF tournament, whichon November 19. Cuba, Guatemala, the United States and Trinidad and Tobago make up group A, while Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti and Surinam form group C.
The first two places in each group will go to a final stage when all teams will play against each other.
The first three will qualify for South Africa, while the fourth place will face the fifth place in the South American qualifier for a place in the 2010 World Cup.
