Diego Maradona received the World Cup Golden Ball award on November 13 for his achievements during last June's World Cup in Mexico. The 25-year-old Napoli forward, the driving force behind Argentina's 3-2 victory over West Germany in the final, was voted player of the tournament by 920 journalists who covered the Mexico finals. The football writers gave him 2,564 points, well in front of West German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher with 344 and Danish striker Preben Elkjaer with 236 points. During the same ceremony, sponsored by a sportswear manufacturer and the French football weekly "France Football", Ajax Amsterdam centre forward Marco van Basten received the Golden Boot as Europe's best marksman last season with 37 goals in 34 matches in European league competition. England's Gary Lineker was awarded the World Cup Golden Boot as leading scorer of the competition with six goals. Oliveira Careca of Brazil and Emilio Butragueno, who both scored five goals, received silver and bronze boots.
