COLOMBIA: BOBBY MOORE, CAPTAIN OF THE ENGLAND WORLD CUP SOCCER TEAM, CONDITIONALLY RELEASED AFTER BEING HELD ON SUSPICION OF STEALING A BRACELET

Story

Bobby Moore, captain of England's World Cup soccer team, w conditionally released on Thursday, May 28 after being held in Bogota, Colombia on suspicions of staling a gold and diamond bracelet from a hotel jewellery shop.

The Colombian judge, Mr Pedro Dorado said that there was at this time insufficient evidence to continue holding the English footballer.

Moore had to sing a document saying he would abide by the conditions of his release which require him top report occasionally to a Colombian consul while he is out of the country. Conditional release also means that Moore can be recalled to court.

As the English captain prepared to re-join his team-mates in Mexico he said that he was happy to be set free and glad that the accusation against him turned out to be groundless. He promised to co-operate with the Colombian authorities and added that he wished to forget the incident and return to help his players retain the World Cup championship. There had been fears that the investigations would prevent Moore from reaching Mexico in time for the start of the World Cup games on Monday.

TRANSCRIPT:

MOORE: I am very happy to be a free man once again and am pleased that the accusations that have been made against me have been shown to be unfounded. I shall be pleased to co-operate if necessary with the Colombian authorities to assist them in any further enquiries they may wish to make into the case. Now all I want to do is to forget the incident and return to my job and playing football and to help England retain the World Cup. I am grateful to the Colombian people for the many expressions of sympathy and support which I have received during the past few days and I would also like to thank my friends who have looked after me so well under these very difficult circumstances.
