Queen Elizabeth launched, Oct 21, Britain's first nuclear submarine, "Dreadnought" at the Vickera-Armstrong dockyard at Barrow-In-Furness. With the Queen on the launching platform was the Duke of Edinburgh and the Chief of the Defense Staff, Earl Mountbatten. Another guest at the ceremony was Admiral H.G. Rickover, head of the nuclear propulsion division of the United States Navy.

A cheer broke from the crowd of about 12,000 as the 20 million pound vessel entered the water. The tear-drop 266ft hull of the "Dreadnought" will be powered by an American reactor. In design it differs slightly from the American nuclear submarines in having a more streamlined bow. "Dreadnought's" Captain Commander Peter Samborne attended the launching ceremony with several members of his crew. It is expected the vessel will be commissioned sometime in 1962.

Tests on the hull design have proved that the tear shape will cause less turbulence under water and will allow it to move below the surface at about 35 to 40 knots. To be fitted out the vessel will now enter a special dock built to take nuclear submarines.
