INSIDE THE BOEING 777 JUMBO JET
The Boeing 777 is the world's newest and most sophisticated jet liner. Although this airship looks pretty much like all the others, in many ways it represents a monumental shift in the way airplanes are designed and built.

In 1986, Boeing recognized the desire, and market for a new airplane; something between the 300 passenger short range 767 and the 500 passenger long range 747. They came up with a plan for a 300 passenger airplane that could go long or short. At first, they thought an expansion of the 767 would work, but further exploration with everybody from pilots to mechanics to flight attendants revealed they would need an entirely new airplane, and the 777 was born. Hoping that this plane will come to dominate the next several decades of air travel, Boeing has dubbed it "21st century jet."

While this show certainly follows the design and build process in depth, it also follows Captains' PAUL HINTON and JIM GAULT, top guns at American Airlines, as they fly this 100 million dollar marvel from Dallas to London. We examine what this airplane is like now that it's in service, and how the passengers, mechanics, pilots, and flight attendants are enjoying it ..... since they helped to design it.

It is also Jim's retirement flight, and in a few weeks Paul will follow. We look back on their careers, and watch Jim say good-bye during a special ceremony. The life they have known for so many years is ending. But the honor of flying the Queen of the fleet, the Boeing 777, has been a special gift, for these were two of the first to pilot this 21st century airliner, and that will last their lifetime.
