The USS Pittsburgh is a "Los Angeles" attack class submarine. It's 360 feet of silent deadly protection, and it contains some of the most classified, top-secret technology in the Pentagon's vast arsenal.
The Pittsburgh has been out for almost six months - a very long tour for the crew of 140. Most of it was spend under combat conditions in the Mediterranean as part of the NATO military response to the Kosovo crisis. They are ready to come home.
The "ON THE INSIDE" crew made their way to La Magdallena, Italy (off the northern tip of Sardinia) and was allowed onboard the Pittsburgh for it's last week of duty before heading back to the U.S. They documented in fascinating detail life on board a nuclear submarine. Everyone from the captain to the head cook came under scrutiny revealing a deadly serious would of discipline, duty and comradeship. We see low ranking submariners forced to find makeshift quarters on the floor, directly underneath a rack of torpedoes. We witness a crewman being awarded his dolphin pin - a time honoured tradition which says to the world, "I am a submariner!" we watch as the captain runs his men through drills and exercises as he strives to keep his crew razor sharp, even this late into their tour.
We also went to Groton, Connecticut to film the emotion packed homecoming of the Pittsburgh as husbands reunite with wives; boyfriends with girlfriends; and an all around tired and homesick crew reacquaint themselves with their "land based" lives.
While in Groton, we were able to film at the submarine training school and came out with great footage of recruits being tested to their limits in a series of emergency simulations. The fire training and flooding exercises are particularly dramatic.
The total package gives us a comprehensive and riveting look at life onboard a nuclear submarine, what it takes to keep one battle ready, and the sacrifices the men and their families make to serve their country as best they can.
