Story:

Some of the biggest names in high street banking have in effect been taken over by the state to try to stave off financial catastrophe. Thirty seven billion pounds of taxpayers' money was pumped into Royal Bank of Scotland, HBOS and Lloyds TSB. Senior board members of the banks have resigned. The huge investment of Government money is intended to get the banks to start lending to the public and to each other, as they did before this crisis. There have been signs of approval from the City with the FT One Hundred share index rising by eight percent. Read more
