}T06059405 CHANNEL TUNNEL OPENING CEREMONY: The Channel Tunnel Rail Link
6.5.94 was officially opened today with a ribbon cutting ceremony
TX in Coquelles, France by French Pres Francois Mitterrand and
British Monarch Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen travelled through
the tunnel to meet Mitterrand and then the French President
travelled on the car shuttle back to Folkestone. The Queen said
that the tunnel was a great engineering triumph, a triumph for
co-operation and the end of 40 million years of separation.
After cutting the ribbon, the Queen presented Mitterrand with a
coin. The French Pres responded by handing the Queen the piece
of ribbon he was holding.
