Cameron interview SOT
- I'm here this morning to highlight the issue of school transport, to promote the idea of more school buses / Yellow bus schemes like the one behind me are having a huge impact in terms of reducing congestion, helping parents get their children to school and getting cars off the road and being good for the environment while at the same time expanding school choice / So it's good for everybody / Here in Surrey the council has actually spent 5 million pounds of its own money with no help from the government in order to expand these school buses and it's cut the number of cars at the school gate in the morning by twenty percent
- There's far more that we could do so I'm encouraging all Conservative councils to look at school buses and yellow bus projects like these / Have set up a working group bringing together Conservative councillors from across the country to see what more we can do to help the schemes / We'll be working in terms of the government's legislation going through parliament to improve it and gives councils greater freedom to expand these sort of projects beacuse we really need to look at ways we can help families to make green choices / It's not about punishing anybody or telling them what to do / It's about giving people options so that they don't have to use their cars so much so children can get to school safely and on time in a comfortable school bus while at the same time avoiding congestion and being good for the environment / All round win
- By making the buses safe clean, friendly, punctual / The bus I travelled on this morning / You've got a guardian on the bus who is the same person every day who takes the names of the children as they get on / Is familiar to all the kids and they know it's a good service / They like having the DVD on it as well so they can watch their favourite film / If you make it an attractive alternative then people will be quite happy to get out of their cars / As a parent you want to know it's a good safe clean reliable alternative / So provide that and you can reduce congestion on the roads / In America fifty percent of children go to school on the school bus / In this country it's just six percent / There's far more we can do and it's a really exciting agenda and one that I am determined the Conservative government is going to persue

- (Asked if Charles Clarke should resign) I do, for several reasons / First he presided over a system which was clearly in chaos / Prisoners were being released from prison onto our streets when they should have been deported / What's worse is that when he found out this last July he had the opportunity to put it right and the rate at which prisoners were being released and not deported actually went up / And even very recently he's frankly mislead people about the scale of the problem / We discovered over the weekend that he knew a full three weeks before he told the prime minister about this problem and he didn't even tell the police / I'm afraid this is just a catalogue of incompetence and blunders / The Home Office needs new leadership / He has to go
- (Asked what he would do if he were in power) I think we need to change the way that it's run / I think the Home Office has a huge role to play in terms of security and terrorism and I've argued for a long time that we should have a separate cabinet minister alongside the Home Secretary who specifically deals with security and terrorism / If you did that you'd give security and terrorism the priority it needs while leaving, hopefully a new Home Secretary, to deal with the problems of crime and immigration that are frankly in meltdown under this government / That is a constructive suggestion that would help the running of the Home Office but I'm afraid what we need is not just a reshuffle but a repplacement to this government
- (Asked if there should be a reshuffle) Think the prime minister has got to move the Home Secretary / Frankly it's absurd / You need to have somebody as Home Secretary that people can look at and say yes this person should be in charge of public safety, public security and is a responsible figure / People are not going to be able to look at Charles Clarke and think that probably ever
- (Asked about John Prescott) I think it's a matter for the prime minister / John Prescott's affair is a private matter / I'm concerned about his ministerial record and that's where I'm calling him to account / This is a minister who is forcing regionalisation onto our communities when people don't want it / Someone who is bulldozing homes in the north of England, concreting over the south of England / Record on transport is a huge failure / I'm going to call John Prescott to account on his ministerial career which I'm afraid is not one to be proud of / Not going to be talking about his private life / Thanks
