UNITED STATES: INSANITY TRIAL OF ALLEGED SERIAL KILLER JEFFREY DAHMER BEGINS IN WISCONSIN.

Please read the Disclaimer

The insanity trial of alleged serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer began in the United States (U.S.) on Monday (January 27) and potential jurors were warned that they would hear descriptions of human carnage, mutilation and cannibalism. Dahmer, a 31-year-old former chocolate factory worker, has confessed to killing and dismembering 17 young men and boys and is being tried for 15 of the deaths. Under Wisconsin law, Dahmer's dropping of his not-guilty plea and entering guilty triggers an insanity hearing. The trial began with the selection of jurors, which was expected to last two or three days. The prosecuter and defence attorney both questioned potential jurors about whether hearing horrific testimony would upset or prejudice them. Five of them said they would have difficulty listening to such evidence. Psychiatrist Basil Jackson said jurors may reach a conclusion by "gut reaction" rather than listening to psychiatric evidence.
