USA: MAN DETAINED AS PRIME SUSPECT FOR THE SIXTEEN 'NIGHT STALKER' MURDERS WHEN HE TRIED TO STEAL A CAR.

A man, detained on August 31, has been named as a prime suspect for the 16 'Night Stalker' murders committed around Los Angeles since February. The suspect, Richard Ramirez, was arrested after he was chased down a street and beaten by a group of angry residents when he tried to pull a woman from her car. The woman's husband, who attacked Ramirez with a fence post, was joined by a group of bystanders after they recognised Ramirez's resemblance to a police drawing of the 'Stalker'. Bystander, Paul Martin, said that the crowd would have killed Ramirez if police had not arrived and intervened. Los Angeles police spokesman, Lieutenant Dan Cooke, confirmed that Ramirez was the man they had been seeking in connection with the series of crimes. Ramirez's fingerprints were matched to a print taken from the car of the most recent victim. The so-called 'Night Stalker' entered homes at night and attacked the occupants. In addition to the 16 murders the same attacker was suspected of a series of assaults, rapes and child abductions. Although most of the attacks occurred around Los Angeles, some took place as far away as San Francisco.
