(SOUNDBITE) (English) WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) CEO, MIKE BAKER, SAYING:
"Our partnership with the Romanian group AMP (Romanian animal protection organization 'Asociatia Milioane De Prieteni') has meant that we've now managed to open this sanctuary. And as we can see behind us, the bears and the life they're having now... These were bears that were illegally held in cages, put in circuses, in zoos, in terrible conditions. They had all sorts of wounds, back problems, blinded. Terrible life they had. And they now got a real quality of life.
More importantly, we've worked with the Romanian government to make sure that this whole problem is ended. So they clamped down on this illegal bear cub trade that them up in cages by road-sides and what have you. And through that we managed to make sure that these will be the last set of bears that ever have to go through that. So we managed to solve that problem. And that this sanctuary has enabled that to happen, we're very proud of that."

"It's not just the bears we see here. But the impact that has more widely. In Turkey, we've ended the use of dancing bears, in India we've ended the use of dancing bears."

(SOUNDBITE) (Romanian) BEAR SANCTUARY PRESIDENT, CRISTINA LAPIS, SAYING:
"We will never totally finish with our work. The 2.5 million euro of the WSPA donation has been used up now. It was a generous donation, they didn't want anything in exchange - just to know that in Romania there are no more bears in captivity."
