Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at his Jerusalem home on Wednesday (September 15) to discuss a peace deal -- but gave no sign of progress toward breaking a deadlock over settlement building.
As Clinton arrived at the Israeli Prime Minister's residence, Noam Shalit, the father of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit said there could not be any peace deal until his son was returned home.
"There will be no progress in the peace talks without freeing my son because the Israeli people will not accept any agreement with the Palestinians before bringing back my son home and as soon as possible," Noam Shalit said as the talks began in Jerusalem.
Clinton arrived at Netanyahu's residence ahead of trilateral talks in Jerusalem, following a round of negotiations in Egypt a day earlier.
Asked if they had made progress, Netanyahu told reporters: "We are working on it, thank you, working very hard. It's a lot of work but I am glad to have the opportunity to welcome President Abbas and Secretary Clinton here pursuing peace, and I think we should get on with it."
It was Abbas's first visit to Netanyahu's official residence in Jerusalem since Israel's prime minister took office 18 months ago. He had previously held talks there with Netanyahu's predecessor, Ehud Olmert.
"Today I returned to this house after a long period of absence in order to continue the talks and the negotiations, in hope of arriving at an eternal peace in all the region, and especially peace between the Israeli people and the Palestinian people," he wrote in the visitors' book.
Netanyahu and Abbas resumed direct dialogue in Washington on September 2 and met again with Clinton in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Tuesday. Close
