Saturday (14 August) sow the beginning of the English football season. Double champions Arsenal opened their defence of the English First Division Soccer title, scoring a clear-cut 3 - 0 victory over Chelsea, holders of the European Cup-Winners' Cup.
Arsenal, who completed the rare league and Football Association Cup double last season, thrilled the 49,000 crowd, at London's Highbury Stadium, with their attacking power. Team captain Frank McLintock headed Arsenal into a 16th minute lead, before Ray Kennedy and John Redford scored second-half goals.
Arsenal's Bertie Mee was presented with the "Manager of the Year" award before the kickoff.
SYNOPSIS: In London on Saturday, the opening of the English football season, Arsenal, league champions and Football Association Cup holders, began in convincing style against Chelsea. They played particularly well in the first half. They won control in midfield and from there they launched attack after attack on the Chelsea goalkeeper. Chelsen, defending here, tries to get the ball away, but still in Arsenal's possession.
It is from this throw that Arsenal go into the lead. Watch for number five, Frank McLintock, the Arsenal captain. After a couple of odd bounces, a beautifully placed header over the head of the Chelsea goalkeeper. The score made it one to nil, Arsenal, at halftime.
In the second half they scored twice more. The second of their goals coming midway through the half, by number ten, Ray Kennedy. A long shot but the type of goal Kennedy is in the habit of scoring. Later, John Redford added the third and final goal to clinch this opening game for Arsenal.
