When Emma's governess, Miss Taylor, marries, Emma misses her companionship. Emma befriends Harriet Smith and makes her reject a wedding proposal from the farmer Robert Martin. This annoys Mr. Knightley, the only person who sees Emma's faults. Emma's plan is to marry Harriet to Mr. Elton, a vicar, but he proposes to Emma himself.
Jane Fairfax arrives in town. Emma dislikes her reserved nature. The arrival of Frank Churchill sets the town wondering whether he and Emma will marry. Emma is charmed by him, but he decides he should marry Harriet.
However, Harriet is interested in Mr. Knightly. Emma not only discovers this, but also that Frank is secretly engaged to Jane.
Emma realises she loves Mr. Knightly, who proposes to her. Emma accepts. Harriet happily agrees to marry Robert Martin.
