WILLIAM AND MARY
EPISODE 0013
William and Mary are now the proud parents of 20-month-old Thomas, whose arrival has changed their lives dramatically. The little boy is adored by his elder brothers and sisters, Mary's sons Brendan and Terence, and William's daughters Kate and Julia.
With the new addition to the family, plus housekeeper Mrs Ball, and a never ending stream of visitors, the house is chaotic as ever.
It's time for Kate and Brendan to think about further education. But while Kate has set her heart on a place at Oxford, Brendan is less enthusiastic about going to university, and hasn't even completed his application, despite constant badgering by his mum and William.
Kate has a new boyfriend, Callum (JOSEPH MORGAN). She has kept him well away from her family so far, leaving her open to much teasing from the boys about her "invisible boyfriend". But Callum is due to be introduced at Brendan's 18th birthday party.
Local vicar John Castlemaigne (TIM WOODWARD) is devastated by the death of his daughter, Melanie (VERITY-JANE DEARSLEY). He contacts William to make the arrangements for her funeral. His daughter Melanie died after contracting meningitis. He wants to conduct the funeral service himself, but William is not sure he will be emotionally capable.
The undertakers is very busy with back to back funerals, but William wants to make sure he personally collects Melanie's body from the mortuary so John can have her at home before the funeral. Melanie is just a few years older than his own daughter Kate, and she lost her mother to cancer too, so he feels for John.
William recruits Rick to help him out. Rick feels a little uncomfortable in his black suit, and at the prospect of seeing a corpse for the first time. But he steels himself. At the mortuary William is about to take Melanie's body when Rick tells him that John has arrived unexpectedly. Rick has taken him to the hospital chapel. John is inconsolable, and blames himself for Melanie's death, saying he has been a bad parent. Rick volunteers to drive the mortuary van, while William drives John home.
William is so impressed with how Rick dealt with the situation that he proposes to Arnold (JAMES GREENE) and Jane (CATHERINE TERRIS) that they employ him as an undertaker.
Molly and Rick arrive at the house to take baby Thomas out. Molly hasn't been herself lately, and Mary had been worried about her, but is pleased to see her all smiles, and back on form. But Molly is almost trying too hard to show she is OK. Rick tells Mary that Molly has lost her job at the supermarket because she has had to have too much time off work lately.
Mary is looking after a blind couple, Jill and Ron Barlow (ANNA CANNINGS and TIM GEBBELS), who are expecting their first baby. Jill is upset because their consultant has told them she must have the baby in hospital. Jill desperately wants to give birth at home, where she and her husband are familiar with everything around them, rather than the strange confines of a hospital. Mary promises to come with them for their next meeting with the consultant to see if she can change his mind.
As Mary arrives at the hospital for the meeting she sees Doris stepping out of a smart car, and kissing the driver. He's Doris' new boyfriend Eamon (CONNOR BYRNE)!
Mary and Doris make a convincing case to Mr Ormerond (SILAS CARSON), the consultant, about how much better it would be for Jill and Ron, for their baby to be born at home, where they are much more relaxed and confident in their own surroundings. Mr Ormerond explains there's a high risk of the baby being born blind, like Jill and Ron, hence the decision for a hospital birth.
Jill stuns the meeting by admitting that a large part of her actually wants the baby to be born blind. She doesn't want their child to grow up to become their carer if the baby is born sighted.
Then it's Mr Ormerond's turn to surprise every one. He admits he felt uneasy at the hospital birth decision, and he tells them he thinks they should have their baby at home. Jill and Ron are beside themselves with delight and relief.
The children are decorating the house for Brendan's 18th birthday party the following day when William arrives home from work. With the family all busy with the party preparations Mary seizes her chance to seduce William when he comes into the bedroom to change his suit She wants another baby but William is not sure whether they should add to their already large family. He doesn't stand a chance when Mary has made up her mind. But just as they are getting cosy under the duvet, little Thomas manages to climb out of his cot and stands beside the bed. The perfect contraceptive!
Kate can barely contain her excitement when she is offered interviews for places at three different colleges at Oxford. William is delighted for her, but it leaves Mary feeling deflated that Brendan is not doing nearly as well as Kate.
Jill goes into labour, and Mary and Doris are at her side. They call Mr Ormerond as the delivery gets closer. As soon as the baby is born Mr Ormorond checks his sight. The baby's sight is perfect. Every one is filled with tears of joy, even Jill. She didn't dare hope that her baby would actually be able to see.
Meanwhile, Molly is at the hospital with Thomas. She has an appointment at the oncology clinic. She has kept her illness secret from every one and is here to hear the results of a biopsy and the prognosis. The consultant breaks the bad news that Molly is in the early stages of Non Hodgkins Lymphona. Molly can't take in the news. As Mary is leaving the hospital she spots her son being entertained by medical students. Then a dazed Molly begins to explain what has been happening. But she's amazingly upbeat, and says she's determined to beat the disease.
At the funeral of Melanie Castlemaigne, her father John breaks down in the middle of the service. He is unable to continue and walks out to the vestry. As the congregation become restless, William tries to persuade John that he must go on and complete the service.
At the end of a traumatic day for William and Mary they meet up at home where Brendan's birthday party is in full swing, with teenagers spilling from every room and music blaring from speakers. William finds Mary in tears and she tells him her mum has cancer. A party is the last thing either of them feel like. But they have to put on brave faces for their children's sake.
