The Williams family become the Maltravers clan in this episode of Heartbeat, when Simon Williams, his wife Lucy Fleming and their son Tam Williams appear together.
Simon plays Colonel Maltravers, a well-respected figure in Ashfordly society, with Lucy as wife Joan, and Tam Williams as Charles, returning home after working for several years in Kenya.
During a dinner to celebrate their son's return, the Maltravers fall prey to an armed robber, who makes off with most of Joan Maltravers' precious jewellery. He crashes his car while trying to escape and mysteriously vanishes.
Then Rosie (Vanessa Hehir) finds Joan's jewellery in the back of the getaway car. The Maltravers have already made an insurance claim for the missing jewels and aren't too impressed when Merton says he'll hold the items at the station until the claim is resolved. When the station is broken into, and a notorious thug with a record for armed robbery is brought in for questioning, what first appeared to be a straight-forward case of burglary becomes something far more complicated.
Elsewhere David (David Lonsdale), who was washing up at the Maltravers' during the robbery, is hailed as a local hero for giving chase to the burglar. He finds himself at the heart of a media circus as his fame grows, leaving Bernie (Peter Benson) exasperated to say the least.
And Liz Merrick (Aislin McGuckin) faces a difficult decision. Ben Norton (Richard Lintern) has been offered the job of a lifetime by Charles Maltravers; he will be in charge of a huge estate. The only snag is it's in Kenya and he wants Liz to go with him! Though initially unsure, when Ben asks Liz to marry him, she finally agrees.
