100 GREATEST ...
THE 100 GREATEST TV ADS
Remember Nick Kamen in the laundrette, the Smash Martians, and the R-Whites secret lemonade drinker? Television ads are an integral part of pop culture and by their very nature they are compulsive viewing - they have to be to sell their product. Presented by GRAHAM NORTON, The 100 Greatest TV Ads counts down the all time greatest 100 ads as voted by the British public, in the first TV poll of its kind. From the innocent '50s to the streetwise '90s advertisements tell as much about the current culture and aspirations of society as they do the products themselves. The 100 Greatest TV Ads tells the stories behind the ads - how the idea came about, how the ad was made, why it was banned or what happened to its star. GAIL PORTER will be taking a global view of some ads you won't have seen, a handful of classics that had the bad manners to be made abroad. The programme shows all 100 ads mixed with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the advertising industry movers and shakers who made the ads and the stars who feature in them including: GARY LINEKER, MELANIE SYKES, GRIFF RHYS JONES, LORRAINE CHASE, VICTOR KIAM and directors TONY KAY and ALAN PARKER. 1 Guinness: horses and surfers, 1999 2 Smash: Martians, 1973 3 Tango Orange Man, 1992 4 Electricity Association: Heat - Nick Park's Creature Comforts, 1992 5 Boddingtons: Melanie Sykes Ice Cream, 1997 6 Levi's Launderette - Nick Kamen, 1985 7 R Whites: Secret Lemonade Drinker, 1972 8 Hamlet: Baldy Man in Photo Booth, 1986 9 Walker's Crisps: Gary Lineker, 1993 10 Impulse: Chance Encounter - first gay ad, 1998 11 Cinzano: Airliner with Joan Collins & Leonard Rossiter, 1978 12 Renault Clio: Interesting - Papa & Nicole, 1991 13 Yellow Pages: JR Hartley, 1983 14 BT: The Ology with Maureen Lipman, 1987 15 Nike: Park Life - Cantona, Seaman, Ian Wright, etc., 1997 16 Coca-Cola: Teach the World to Sing, 1971 17 Carling Black Label: Dambusters, 1989 18 Shake 'n' Vac: Dancing Woman, 1979 19 Andrex: Puppy, 1972 20 Real Fires: Furry Friends - dog, cat & mouse, 1988 21 Ferrero Rocher: Ambassador's reception, 1995 22 Oxo: Oxo family, from 1957 23 Cornetto: Just one Cornetto, 1980 24 PG Tips: Chimps, Mr Shifter, 1970 25 Castlemaine: I wouldn't give a XXXX - sherry, 1986 26 Flake: Flake girl, from 1961 27 Milky Bar: Milky Bar kid, from 1961 28 Hovis: Boy on bicycle, 1974 29 Heineken: Refreshes the parts - water in Majorca, 1986 30 Kit Kat: Pandas, 1989 31 Gold Blend: Couple, from 1987 32 Duracell: Rabbit, 1981 33 John Smith's Bitter: Dog tricks, 1981 34 Pepsi: Lipsmackinthirstquenchin, 1973 35 Martini: Anytime, anyplace, anywhere, 1971 36 Cadbury's Fruit and Nut: Frank Muir, from 1977 37 Turkish Delight: Eastern Promise, from 1957 38 Apple: 1984, 1984 39 Fosters: Paul Hogan/ballet, 1984 40 Tetley: Teafolk, from 1973 41 Campari: Luton Airport, 1977 42 VW: Changes, Paula Hamilton, 1987 43 Old Spice: Surfer, 1978 44 Esso: Tiger campaign, from 1964 45 One-2-One: Ian Wright, 1997 46 Milk: Humphrey's about, 1975 47 Mates Condoms: Chemist shop, 1988 48 Milk Tray: Avalanche - And all because ... from 1974 49 Heinz Beans: A million housewives every day, from 1967 50 Stella Artois: Flowers, 1991 51 Dulux: Digby the dog, from 1963 52 Homepride: Flour men, from 1967 53 Sugar Puffs: Honey Monster, from 1976 54 Holsten Pils: Griff Rhys Jones, 1983 55 Whiskas: Eight out of 10 cats, 1980 56 Fiat: Handbuilt by robots, 1979 57 After Eights: dinner party, 1993 58 Hofmeister: Follow the bear, 1983 59 Audi: Vorsprung durch Technik, 1984 60 Rice Krispies: Snap, crackle and pop, from 1955 61 Maxell: Ears are alight, 1989 62 British Airways: Face, 1989 63 Yorkie: Long-distance lorry driver, 1976 64 Bird's Eye Fish Fingers: Captain Bird's Eye, from 1967 65 Schweppes: Schhh... you know who - William Franklyn, from 1963 66 Toshiba: 'Ullo Tosh, 1984 67 Sony: Armchair out of plane, 1995 68 British Gas: If you see Sid, 1987 69 Dunlop: Tested for the unexpected, 1993 70 Cresta: Dignity - frothy bear man, 1974 71 Guardian: Points of view, 1986 72 Fairy Liquid: Hands that do dishes, from 1961 73 Murray Mints: Too good to hurry mints, from 1955 74 Lego: Kipper, cat and dog animation, 1980 75 Mars: Work, rest and play, from 1978 76 British Rail: Relax, Intercity, 1988 77 Eggs: Go to work on an egg, 1966 78 Olympus Cameras: Wedding photographer, 1977 79 Remington: Victor Kiam, 1979 80 Bird's Eye Beefburgers: Ben and Mary, 1974 81 Fruit Gums: Don't forget the Fruit Gums, from 1956 82 Shell: We're going well, 1962 83 Cointreau: French boy and English girl, from 1972 84 Brut: Henry Cooper, 1976 85 Courage Best: Gercha, 1979 86 Nimble: Balloon, 1974 87 Strand: You're never alone, 1960 88 Double Diamond: Works wonders, 1968 89 Chunky: Clement Freud, from 1967 90 Barclaycard: Alan Whicker, from 1984 91 B&H small cigars: George Cole as spy, 1974 92 Gibbs SR: first TV ad, 1955 93 Timex: Beatles lookalike, 1964 94 Parker Pens: Finishing school, 1974 95 Charlie: Revlon, 1975 96 Sainsbury's: Denis Healey, 1993 97 Clarks Shoes: Foot drawing, 1977 98 Meccano: Boy in man's world, 1967 99 Chum: Top breeders, from 1984 100 Stork SB: Tell the difference, from 1978
