RISE OF THE INDEPENDENTS
Record date: 15/06/81
Music show introduced by Danny Baker, produced by Janet Street-Porter.

Toyah Wilcox performs live on stage.
Wilcox's co-owner of Safari Records' John Craig is interviewed in his office. He talks about his relationship with the bands under that label, how they can communicate on a one to one basis with the artists.
Stiff Records owner Dave Robinson is shown working in his office, on the phone organising a tour, stood discussing ideas with Jennie Matthias of The Belle Stars, signed to his label. He is also interviewed and tells us about indie labels being a more direct way of operating. The emergence of Punk rock assisted in the growth of indie label's popularity.
John Lydon is interviewed and gives his opinion on the different kinds of record labels and how they handle their bands.
V/O Danny Baker describes the newer "DIY" approach to band management. "DIY" band The Extroverts from High Wickham riding their motorbikes and side-car taking their music to a pressing plant themselves to be processed. They create one thousand copies of their new single and expect them to sell out from self distribution. Doug Cain, head of the pressing plant, speaks about the growing demand for his services from indie bands.

Shots of the inside of a record shop. Danny Baker stands in front of an Our Price store talking about imports.
External shot of RCA Pressing Plant in Durham. This factory was forced to close down after only four years of business due to the rapid decline in record production since the Sixties within the country, since it's cheaper to import.
Interview with David Reece of Record Business.
John Collins, manager of The Specials, speaks of how he has them recorded in his front room. He's not interested in how many tracks can be used to make an album, he listens to the band as a whole and if it sounds good to him, it's good to record them all straight out.
Graham Lewis of Wire is interviewed. He has worked for EMI, but is now much happier working on his own.
Iain McNay owner of Indie label Cherry Red runs the business from his flat in Wimbledon with only two employees. He describes how things are run there.
Internal shots of Notting Hill's Rough Trade warehouse. Workers can be seen going about their daily business.
Tom McDonnell of Spartan Records is also interviewed. Shots of workers in a warehouse packing records for distribution from high street shops.
Dave Lee Travis and Trevor Dann are in the Radio 1 Studio deciding which records to play on the show. Trevor Dann is interviewed and states that they pay no attention to which record label the music comes from, that it makes no difference to the selections they make. They choose the songs on the sound alone.
Scottish band Orange Juice is shown arriving into a London train station and is interviewed in a café.
Toyah Wilcox is live on stage again to end the programme.
