WORLD IN ACTION
INSIDE AMIN'S TERROR MACHINE
On 25 January 1971, Idi Amin overthrew the president of Uganda, Dr Milton Obote. So began a reign of terror, violence and murder that lasted more than eight years.
In a special report by the World In Action team, the full extent of the horror of Amin's regime is revealed for the first time. The film presents the grisly facts: the memoranda found in Amin's house ordering the killing of his opponents, the bloodstained courtyards, the cells where 100s of prisoners awaited death.
The Granada team even found film of atrocities committed with the president's approval - film Amin would watch for entertainment. There is evidence, too, in the form of business letters and invoices, showing that some British firms continued to supply Amin with goods within weeks of his overthrow.
World in Action was the first documentary unit to film in Uganda after the overthrow of Amin. Inside Amin's Terror Machine shows the true colours of a man the Western world dismissed as a laughable buffoon. Interviews with survivors of the regime, and even with a former member of Amin's dreaded State Research Centre tell the chilling story of Amin's eight year reign of terror.
